Amy Ryan shares her “intense ride” playing Mari Gilbert in Netflix's “Lost Girls”

Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan discusses the Netflix film “Lost Girls,” available March 13 and directed by Liz Garbus. “Lost Girls” is based on real events and Robert Kolker’s best-selling book about Mari Gilbert, played by Ryan, who is a mother searching for her 24-year-old daughter. Gilbert then discovers more than a dozen unsolved murders of sex workers and creates a bond with the mothers. Ryan shares her own memories of the Long Island Serial Killer and what the role meant to her—bringing dignity and humanity back to all women.

She also opens up acting and playing unlikeable characters. “It's not my job to like this character. It's certainly not my job to judge them. Once I start judging them, it's a doomed project,” Ryan said on “Salon Talks.” “I am more comfortable with truth. I would cringe if something was not quite right. I'd rather check my ego at the door and go from there.”
