Coronavirus: Calls to ramp up vaccine rollout over fears of new COVID-19 variant

There are calls for more stringent lockdowns, curbs to international travel and a need to vaccinate people faster following the discovery of a new, possibly more contagious variant of the novel coronavirus in Canada.

On Saturday, Ontario reported the first two cases of the coronavirus strain that was first identified in the United Kingdom, and has since spread to Australia, Japan and several European countries. A third case was reported in Ottawa on Sunday, and a fourth case was reported in Alberta on Monday.

The U.K. variant was first announced by the British government on Dec. 14.
