Cher welcomes 'world's loneliest elephant' Kaavan to wildlife sanctuary

Kaavan, Pakistan's famous Asian elephant who has spent years in chained isolation, departed Islamabad zoo and arrived in Cambodia on Sunday.

In 2012, Kaavan lost his enclosure partner Saheli, and has lived a life of solitude away from his kind ever since. In 2016, campaigners launched efforts to provide a better life for the animal, which was made possible in May 2020, when a court in Islamabad ordered the closure and eviction of the Marghazar Zoo following reports of poor conditions.

Dr. Amir Khalil from the animal welfare organisation the Four Paws International helped to find a way to transport and get the elephant ready for a long journey.

Kaavan will go from living in solitary confinement to walking freely in the sanctuary that houses around 600 other elephants.
