Sun, the king of the planets, is considered a direct form of Lord Vishnu. In Kartik month, Lord Vishnu resides in water. It is believed that worshiping Lord Vishnu and Surya together by entering the river or pond to the waist and offering arghya. At the same time it is also believed that by entering holy rivers, all sins and sufferings are eliminated, so there is a tradition of offering arghya in water. Another belief about entering the river and pond is that the water that falls below while offering the arghya is not sprinkled on the feet of the devotees, so the arghya is given in the water.

ग्रहों के राजा सूर्य को भगवान विष्णु का प्रत्यक्ष रूप माना जाता है। कार्तिक मास में भगवान विष्णु जल में निवास करते हैं। मान्यता है कि नदी या तालाब में कमर तक प्रवेश कर अर्घ्य देने से भगवान विष्णु और सूर्य दोनों की पूजा एकसाथ हो जाती है। वहीं यह भी मान्यता है कि पवित्र नदियों में प्रवेश करने से सभी पाप व कष्ट खत्म हो जाते हैं इसलिए जल में अर्घ्य देने की पंरपरा है। नदी व तालाब में प्रवेश करने को लेकर एक और मान्यता यह भी है कि अर्घ्य देते समय जो जल निचे गिरता है, उस जल का छींटा भक्तों के पैरों पर न पड़े इसलिए अर्घ्य पानी में उतरकर दिया जाता है।
