China gives UK diplomat ‘big thumbs up’ for saving drowning student in Chongqing
  • 3 years ago
China’s government has praised a UK diplomat who recently dived into a river in Chongqing to save a drowning student. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said the woman was saved by an “act of bravery” on the part of 61-year-old Stephen Ellison, Britain’s consul general in the southwestern city. The spokesman’s remarks on November 17, 2020, came amid rising tensions between Beijing and London over human rights and the mobile technology company Huawei.  Video courtesy: AFP
