One cannot talk about India’s history, independence and vision without mentioning the name of Dr B R Ambedkar. Babasaheb Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891 and this year marks his 129th birth anniversary. Ambedkar was born in a Mahar (Dalit) family of Ramji Maloji Sakpal and Bhimabai Sakpal in Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. Dr Ambedkar was the only Dalit from the Mahar family to get an undergraduate degree from Elphinstone College, affiliated to University of Bombay, in 1912. He went on to get a doctorate degree in economics from Columbia University and ‘Doctor All Science' from London School of Economics. He designed the symbol of ‘Ashok Chakra’ on the Indian tricolour. Renowned Columbia University in the United States of America has officially included Dr Ambedkar’s book ‘Waiting for Visa’ in their curriculum as a mandatory textbook. Other than his excellent academic record, Dr Ambedkar is known for his contribution to help Dalits in India lead a respectful life. He drafted the Indian Constitution. One cannot talk about the Poona Pack and not mention him. Ambedkar was posthumously awarded India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1990. India lost its most precious jewel on December 6, 1956.
