Migrant Workers Clash With Police In Surat, Gujarat Amid The Lockdown; Stones Thrown, Tear Gas Fired

Migrant workers clashed with the police yet again on May 4 in Surat, Gujarat. The labourers have been demanding to be sent home. Large population of the workers come from other states to work in the diamond & textile industries. The protesting workers gathered outside the market area in Vareli on the outskirts of Surat. Police was called in to control the crowd. However, as per reports, when the police came in, people started throwing stones at them. The police had to then use tear gas to control the crowd. Another protest by the migrants took place at the Palanpur Patia area of Surat. This is not the first time that migrant labourers protested in Surat amid the lockdown. Meanwhile, special train carrying around 1200 migrant workers left from Surat for Jharkhand on May 4. The number of COVID-19 cases in Gujarat has reached 5804 with 319 deaths being reported.
