Tools for Teaching in an Educationally Mobile World examines undergraduate and postgraduate teaching issues, and the problems encountered when teaching in transnational contexts. It uses examples and experiences from a wide range of disciplines and national contexts. Relevant for teachers in Anglophone countries, including the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, it addresses the needs of teachers using English as a language of instruction in countries where teachers and their students may be non-native English speakers. It focuses on the consequences for interactive teaching and for course design when teaching in a world where students, ideas, and courses are mobile. Students may cross national boundaries to seek accreditation, or the courses may be transnational, being designed in one country and delivered in another local and fly-in faculty. This book helps teachers adjust, adapt and accommodate to this type of fluidity and diversity, drawing upon growing good practice recommendations and tried and tested teaching approaches. However, mobility and diversity prompt challenging questions, and the book is structured around ten of the most common issues and statements of belief held by educators:Around the world, teaching and learning are organised differently.Language matters.Participation by all students needs planning and support.Students can mix and learn from and with each otherStudents must connect past knowledge and experiences with their new tertiary study.Assessment matters.Teaching diverse students is a slow and difficult process.Teachers cannot do it on their own. With a wealth of practical tips and tools that help deal with these issues, this book will be of intrinsic value to any educator who deals with culturally and linguistically diverse students. It will also interest those involved in curriculum and pedagogy design.
