As we reported yesterday, two American economists, Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson, have won this year's Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for improving how auctions work.
But, in the predawn darkness on Monday, Stanford economist Paul Milgrom was surely not prepared for a door knock from his neighbor or a Nobel Prize, for that matter.
That's Bob Wilson, ringing Paul Milgrom's doorbell and knocking on his door.
"Paul? (Knocking, and rings the bell again) Paul? It's Bob Wilson. You've won the Nobel prize. And so they are trying to reach you but they cannot, they don't seem to have a number for you."
"We gave them your cellphone number."
"Wow, ok, (inaudible)"
"Will you answer your phone?
"You need to let them be able to call you."
The men are not just colleagues, but also neighbors and Wilson is a former mentor of Milgrom's.
The work of these two economists based at Stanford University underlies much of today's economy from the way Google sells advertising to the way telecoms companies acquire airwaves from the government.
The Nobel Committee said their work have benefited sellers, buyers and taxpayers around the world.
