Thousands of indigenous people from Papua province in eastern Indonesia, marched on September 24 demanding a independence referendum.

These demonstrators largely took to the streets of the city of Nabire despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic affecting the country.

They walked to the Nabire Regent's office. On the way, they excitedly shouted independence chants, however the Regent was not in the office.

According to Jeffry Wenda, one of the organisers of the protest, the demonstration was attended by thousands of Papuans and was peaceful and safe, until the end of the march, which disbanded in an orderly fashion.
