Moon says declaration ending Korean War will open door to denuclearization, peace

President Moon Jae-in has urged world leaders to bring the seven-decade long Korean War to a formal end... in his latest attempt to resuscitate stalled talks between U.S. and North Korea as well as inter-Korean relations.
He made the call at the 75th UN General Assembly's annual debate saying that an official end-of-war declaration would be the first step toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea's top office said Moon's remarks reflect the administration's unwavering determination to achieve peace.

A declaration to end the Korean War will open the door to complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
That's President Moon Jae-in at the 75th Session of UN General Assembly where he said peace on the Peninsula can also help ensure cordial relations in Northeast Asia.
I hope that the UN and the international community provide support so that we can advance into an era of reconciliation and prosperity through an end-of-war declaration. Peace on the Korean Peninsula will guarantee peace in Northeast Asia, and going forward, it will bring positive changes to the world order.
He also said that South Korea will do its part by continuing dialogue with the North,... and asked for cooperation from the international community...
proposing a new entity dubbed 'Northeast Asia Cooperation Initiative for Infectious Disease Control and Public Health.'
It would bring together the two Koreas, China, Japan and Mongolia.
A cooperative structure that guarantees the collective protection of life and safety will lay the groundwork for North Korea to have its own security guaranteed through engagement with the international community.
Moon's remarks are seen as a gesture to get the peace process back on track amid a deadlock in inter-Korean relations AND North Korea, U.S. denuclearization talks.
The call for an end-of-war declaration, however, is in contrast to Washington's position that such measures will only be taken in tandem with the North's denuclearization.
In his UN address on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump made no mention of North Korea although his UN ambassador praised him for his engagement with Pyeongyang.
"Whether you agree with where Trump is at or not, I think what it did was it allowed space for the Blue House to invigorate its inter-Korean dynamic and shows U.S. support because it shows that talking with North Korea is a good thing and was a departure from the past. // I think what's important to remember on the request for the end-of-war statement is that he said something a little more practical that may be doable either by a Trump administration departing or with Trump re-elected or by Biden incoming."
