China celebrates 'successful victory' over COVID-19

China the origin of the virus is celebrating victory over COVID-19.
Beijing is taking a victory lap as billions of people around the world continue to suffer the economic, health and social impact of the pandemic that shows no sign of subsiding.

A triumphant ceremony was held in China on Tuesday to celebrate the country's successful response in the battle against COVID-19.
The country has reported zero cases of local infections for the past three weeks or so, dating back to mid-August.
Only a dozen imported cases have been reported.
Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed the country's efforts.
"In the life-and-death battle against the serious epidemic, the Chinese people and the Chinese nation have demonstrated the fearless spirit of having the courage to fight and the mettle to win, and have forged the great anti-epidemic spirit of putting lives above anything else, fighting together in solidarity as one, risking one's own life to help others, respecting science, and sharing weal and woe."
He also presented medals to honor those at the forefront against the virus,... including the country's respiratory disease expert, Zhong Nanshan.
Beijing is also touting the progress it has made on vaccine development,... after its homegrown COVID-19 vaccines were put on display at a trade fair this week in Beijing.
They are among ten vaccine candidates worldwide to enter phase three trials,... and Chinese authorities hope they'll be approved by the end of the year.
While China has officially declared victory,... the rest of the world continues to suffer from the rapid spread of the virus.
Against such a backdrop, international tension is expected to linger, especially between Beijing and Washington, over the origin of the virus and vaccine development.
