Cargo ship carrying 43 sailors and 5,800 pets disappeared in the East China Sea.
The Japanese Coast Guard on September 2 started searching for the cargo ship that was lost while traveling in the East China Sea, on board a ship with 43 foreigners and about 5,800 pets.

According to an AFP update at 20:49 p.m. on September 2, rescuers found a person wearing a life vest in the missing cargo ship area. The identity as well as the status of this person is unknown.

Mainichi (Japan) newspaper, citing a coast guard force, said that the 11,947-ton cargo ship Gulf Livestock 1 sent a warning signal at 1:45 am September 2, when the ship was away from Amami-Oshima island of the province. Kogoshima (southwestern Japan) is about 185 kilometers to the west.

The 43 foreigners were members of the crew on board. According to the registered list in Panama, among them are 2 Australians, 39 Filipinos (including the captain) and 2 New Zealanders.

The Coast Guard initially said there was 1 Singaporean on board but then adjusted it, saying it was Australian.

Cargo vessel Gulf Livestock 1 departs from New Zealand August 14 and is scheduled to arrive in China next Friday.
