The first day of the Islamic year is observed by Muslims on the first day of the month of Muharram, beginning at sunset. The Islamic lunar calendar has only 354 or 355 days in its year. The epoch of the Islamic era was set as 622 (CE), the year of the emigration of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his followers from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra.
