What The Heck Is Even Wrong With The German Word "Zigeuner" (Gypsy)?

A number of food maker corporations have begun to rename a popular bell pepper sauce. The "Gypsy sauce" or "Zigeuner sauce" ostensibly offends Sinti and Roma or Romani (Whatever the true word is, the hell awaits all of us who get it wrong.). "Knorr" was the first, "Bautz'ner" followed, "Homann" promised to consider a name change by the time of the next "product relaunch." Retailer "Edeka" is still contemplating while hotel and restaurant guild "DeHoGa" hectors its members to not offend their customers with food anymore.

But how in the world is "Zigeuner" even an offensive word?
