Steam rises from the Taal volcano in the Philippines this morning (August 18).

Geologists recorded five volcanic earthquakes and weak steaming or fumarolic activity at the volcano over the past 24 hours.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that the volcano was at Alert Level 1.

Residents living nearby could suffer sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

The Taal volcano, which sits next to a lake on an island in Batangas province, last erupted in January this year.

There are 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines located from the province of Batanes to Jolo, Sulu. Out of these 24, 13 are located in Luzon, three in Visayas, and eight in Mindanao islands.
