Amid the historic heat wave in the West, the temperature in Death Valley, Calif., surged to 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 degrees Celsius) on the afternoon of August 16. This possibly is a world record for the highest recorded August temperature. If the temperature is valid, it would also rank among the top-three highest temperatures ever reliably measured on the planet at any time & may be the highest. The temperature in Death Valley hit 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 degrees Celsius) at 3:41 pm. Pacific time on August 16, according to the National Weather Service. If verified, the reading would break Death Valley's previous August record by three degrees, the National Weather Service tweeted. The heat has intensified a rash of fires that have erupted in recent days.
