A multi-faceted personality, Patil’s contribution to the game has been immense as he has donned several roles for the years. His good looks, aggressive batsmanship and a liking for big hits made Patil a natural crowd puller. He made his ODI debut towards the end of 1980 against Australia and bagged the Man of the Match award for a brilliant 64. Some fine contributions for West Zone against the visiting Australian and Pakistani teams in 1979-80 earned him the national call-up and he made his Test debut against Pakistan at Chennai on January 15, 1980.

भारतीय क्रिकेट इतिहास में ऐसे कई खिलाड़ी हुए हैं, जिन्होंने कम समय में ही अपने प्रदर्शन से शोहरत कमा ली. उनमें से एक नाम संदीप पाटिल का भी है. संदीप पाटिल का नाम सुनते ही हमारे जहन में एक हैंडसम क्रिकेटर आता है जिनपर लड़कियां मरती थी. उनके शॉट्स और आक्रामक बल्लेबाजी शैली के लोग दीवाने हुआ करते थे. संदीप पाटिल ने टीम इंडिया के लिए 1980 में डेब्यू किया था. पर उन्हें सबसे ज्यादा कामयाबी और लोकप्रियता ऑस्ट्रेलिया दौरे पर जाकर मिली. चेन्नई में पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ डेब्यू करने के बाद संदीप पाटिल को 1980-81 के ऑस्ट्रेलिया दौरे पर भेजा गया. सिडनी में खेलते हुए जब संदीप पाटिल 65 के स्कोर पर थे तो एक गेंद उनकी कनपट्टी पर जाकर लगी.
