South Korea saw 103 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.
Aside from the high number of cases from a chartered flight from Iraq three weeks ago, this marks the highest number of cases in a single day since late March.
Many of the cases came from cluster infections in churches, marketplaces, and schools.
It's got the country's health authorities to consider raising the social distancing level to Level 2.
"We have discussed the possible option of raising social distancing during an emergency meeting held by the Prime Minister. However, the requirement for Level 2 has not been fully met yet."
Of the new infections, 85 were local, with 72 coming from the Seoul metropolitan area.
To stop the further spread of COVID-19, Gyeonggi-do Province Governor Lee Jae-myung has ordered a ban on religious gatherings for two weeks.
Outside of Gyeonggi-do, the city of Seoul also announced a ban on religious gatherings for two weeks, starting this Saturday... affecting 75-hundred-and-60 religious facilities.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters chief, Jung Eun-kyeong, warns the situation in the capital area is serious and could lead to a massive outbreak.
"The epidemic is spreading so rapidly that the number of confirmed cases has doubled in just one day in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province. Thirteen percent of the new cases have no clear origin.
Health authorities add that the risk is even greater because people have become lax in observing quarantine rules.
With no additional deaths reported on Friday, the death toll stands at three-hundred-and-five.
