Well, the Indian currency notes issued earlier since 1987 actually had the Ashoka pillar watermark and Mahatma Gandhi's portrait. But in reality the Mahatma Gandhi series of banknotes was issued by Reserve bank of India in the year 1996 and thus since then it has Gandhi's watermark as well as the Portrait itself.

भारतीय नोटों में पिछले कई साल से बड़े बदलाव हो रहे है. लेकिन लंबे समय से एक चीज जो अभी तक नहीं बलही है. वो है राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी की तस्वीर. नोटों पर गांधी जी की तस्वीर के पीछे भी दिलचस्प कहानी है. सबसे पहले महात्मा गांधी की तस्वीर भारतीय नोट पर सन 1969 में आई थी. यह साल उनका जन्म शताब्दी का था. इन नोटों पर गांधी जी की तस्वीर के पीछे सेवाग्राम आश्रम भी था. जब पहली बार गांधी जी की तस्वीर नोट पर छपी तब इंदिरा गांधी देश की प्रधानमंत्री थीं और एलके झा आरबीआई के गवर्नर हुआ करते थे.
