If everything goes as planned, Indian Railways will be transformed into ‘Green Railways’ by 2030. The railways has taken a number of initiatives toward combating climate change and mitigation of global warming to achieve this goal.The Ministry of Railways released a statement regarding this, stating some of the steps taken as part of the strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emission.

भारतीय रेलवे ने साल 2030 तक ग्रीन रेलवे में बदलने का लक्ष्य रखा है। ऐसा मकाम हासिल करने वाली भारतीय रेल दुनिया की पहली रेलवे होगी। रेल मंत्रालय ने ग्लोबल वार्मिंग को कम करने और जलवायु परिवर्तन से निपटने के लिए कई बड़ी पहल की है। रेलवे ने 40,000 से अधिक रूट किमी का विद्युतीकरण पूरा कर लिया है, जिसमें 2014-20 के दौरान 18,605 किलोमीटर का विद्युतीकरण कार्य किया गया है। इससे पहले, 2009-14 की अवधि के दौरान केवल 3,835 किमी विद्युतीकरण का काम पूरा हुआ था। रेल मंत्रालय द्वारा जारी बयान में कहा गया है कि भारतीय रेलवे ने साल 2020-21 के लिए 7,000 आरकेएम के विद्युतीकरण का लक्ष्य तय किया है।
