Major Somnath Sharma was serving as a Major in the Delta Company of 4th Kumaon regiment when the Pakistani invasion of Jammu and Kashmir began on October 22, 1947. Major Sharma’s company was airlifted to Srinagar on October 31, 1947. Major Sharma served in the war despite his left arm being in a plaster cast due to a previous injury. His and his men's gallant actions helped Indian Army to gain time to get reinforcements and successfully thwart the Pakistani invasion of the Valley. He became India's first Param Vir.
