News round-up for the month of July - Week 1 (1 - 5th July 2020)

PM visits Ladakh amid India-China tensions

Indian PM Narendra Modi arrived in Ladakh amid flaring border tensions with China. PM Modi has been accompanied to Ladakh by the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief Gen MM Naravane.

In the surprise move, Modi visited a forward position in the Nimu sector. The position is located at 11,000 feet (3.35 km). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was scheduled to visit Ladakh, but that visit was rescheduled.

This comes even as Indian and Chinese military talks have shown no clear sign of disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which remains extremely tense after a violent face off in June left 20 soldiers dead on the Indian side and an unconfirmed number on the Chinese side.

In a major move last week, TikTok, UC Browser and WeChat are among the 59 Chinese apps blocked for "engaging in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order."

After the development, TikTok came with its clarification insisting that it did not pass on any information about its users to any foreign government including the Chinese government and would not do so in the future too.

TikTok India’s head Nikhil Gandhi said the company had been invited to meet with government stakeholders concerned “to respond and submit clarifications”.

As the news came in, TikTok’s rival made in India app, Chingari, started getting massive hits.

Chingari’s name on the Google Play Store also carries the tag ‘original Indian short video app’. The app has a 4.7-star rating and over 2.5 million downloads. According to reports, the app has gone from 6 lakh users to 25 lakh in just last 10 days.
