Bill Russell Honored as First African-American NBA Coach on Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a day to commemorate African-American freedom in the United States. SLAM is using the holiday to honor Boston Celtics legend, Bill Russell, as the NBA's first African-American coach. Russell was first named head coach of the Celtics in 1966, while he was still a player. He then won two NBA Championships in '68 and '69.
Russell went on to become head coach of the Seattle Supersonics in the '70s and Sacramento Kings in the '80s.
