The country’s coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases have already surpassed the 28,000-mark after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed 661 new infections.

There are now 28,459 COVID-19 cases in the Philippines since the first case of the dreaded illness was reported last January, said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

Vergeire said that of the new confirmed cases, 460 patients tested positive within the last three days. The National Capital Region had 277 fresh cases, while Central Visayas had 21.

Meanwhile, 201 cases were from the validation backlog or whose test results were released four days ago or more but were only validated by the DOH recently.
The number of recoveries also jumped to 7,378 on Friday with 288 new survivors. The death toll also now reached 1,130 as 14 more fatalities were reported.

The Health official said that the case doubling time, or the time it takes for new cases to increase two-fold, in the Philippines is currently at 7.06 days.
