Scientists in Australia have captured aerial footage showing thousands of green turtles nesting on Raine Island in the Great Barrier Reef as part of a project that pioneered a new way of calculating the population of the sea creatures. The scientists said on June 9, 2020 that the drone footage captured in December last year allowed them to determine that there were about 64,000 endangered green turtles at the Raine Island rookery nearly double the number previously believed to be in the area.
