Although the full moon of each month is considered to be of great importance in Hinduism, but the full moon of Jyestha month is considered more holy. Religiously, the full moon is considered to be of great importance for bathing. It is believed that on this day, after bathing in the Ganges, all the wishes are fulfilled by offering alms and offering donations. In some areas Jyestha Purnima is also observed as Vat Purnima Vrat which is similar to Vat Savitri Vrat. According to some mythological texts (Skanda Purana and Bhavishya Purana), then the full moon of the month of Jyeshtha fast is observed.

भारत के पूज्यनीय वृक्षों में वट यानी बरगद का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। इसे अमरता का प्रतीक भी माना जाता है। वैदिक धर्म के साथ-साथ जैन तथा बौद्घ धर्मों में भी वट वृक्ष का काफी महत्व माना गया है। स्कंद पुराण के अनुसार वट सावित्री व्रत ज्येष्ठ मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन करना चाहिए। अत: गुजरात, महाराष्ट्र और दक्षिण भारत की स्त्रियां ज्येष्ठ पूर्णिमा को यह व्रत करती हैं।
