The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 3 June disposed off petition seeking its directions to the Centre to amend the Constitution and replace the word 'India' with 'Bharat'. The apex court directed the petitioner to send copy of his writ petition as representation to concerned ministries which will decide representation appropriately. The plea claimed that a change of name will help citizens of the country get over the colonial past and instill a sense of pride in their nationality.

संविधान से इंडिया शब्द हटाने की मांग वाली याचिका पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने दखल देने से इनकार कर दिया है. कोर्ट ने कहा कि याचिका को सरकार के पास रिप्रेजेंटेशन के तौर पर माना जाए और केंद्र को ज्ञापन दिया जा सकता है. चीफ जस्टिस ऑफ इंडिया एसए बोबडे ने कहा कि हम ये नहीं कर सकते क्योंकि पहले ही संविधान में भारत नाम ही कहा गया है. याचिकाकर्ता ने दलील दी थी कि संविधान के अनुच्छेद 1 में संशोधन कर इंडिया शब्द हटा दिया जाए.
