U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he spoke with members of George Floyd's family, and has asked the Department of Justice to expedite the federal investigation into his death.

Trump said that while this is a local situation “...we're making it a federal situation and justice will be served.”

Trump also commented on protests happening in Minneapolis, MN following the death of Floyd by saying “it's very important that we have peaceful protesters and support the rights for peaceful protesters.”

He added “it's important that the memory of George Floyd be a perfect memory.”

George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes on Memorial Day, in a killing that so far has triggered three days of violent protests in Minneapolis and solidarity marches across the country.
