F1 driver Lewis Hamilton has roared past David Beckham to become Britain’s wealthiest sports star.

Six-time world champion Hamilton is worth £224million, up £37million in a year, the Sunday Times Rich List has found.
Becks, 45, had raked in £200million jointly with wife Victoria by the time he retired from football in 2013.

So Hamilton, 35, has overtaken him as the most affluent active sports star in the list’s history.

He and golfer Rory McIlroy, 31 — worth £170million after becoming world No 1 again — are the only sports names on the main Rich List.

But sports hotshots dominate the Young Rich List, for those aged 30 or under, taking 18 of the 50 places.

Heavyweight boxing king Anthony Joshua, 30, whose fortune is estimated at £107million, is the only non-footballer among them.
Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale, also 30, was named the richest young footie star with £114million.

Sunday Times Rich List compiler Robert Watts said: “Being the best in the world at what you do is well rewarded in any business or profession.

“Sport is no different. It is no coincidence that Lewis Hamilton and Rory McIlroy are the only two sportsmen to make the main Rich List.”
