In a live chat on Instagram with Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary, Shami recalled an incident when Dhoni reprimanded him after an unnecessary bouncer out of frustration from the speedster. The incident happened in a Test match between India and New Zealand in Wellington in 2014 where Brendon McCullum scored a terrific 302-run-knock to help the hosts draw the Test match. Shami revealed McCullum was dropped by Virat Kohli on 14 before he went on to notch up a triple century.

बात 2014 की है, जब टीम न्‍यूजीलैंड दौरे पर गई थी और वेलिंगटन टेस्‍ट मैच में ब्रेंडन मैक्कुलम ने नाबाद 302 रन जड़ दिए थे. मगर इससे पहले जब मैक्कुलम 14 रन पर थे तो शमी की गेंद पर विराट कोहली से उनका कैच छूट गया और इसके बाद एक और कैच छूटा. जिससे शमी नाराज हो गए थे और लंच से पहले उन्‍होंने बाउंसर मार दी, जो धोनी के सिर के ऊपर से गई. इसके बाद धोनी ने ड्रेसिंग रूम में शमी की फटकार लगाई. शमी ने बताया कि मैक्कुलम का कैच छूटने के बाद वह विराट कोहली के पास गए और पूछा कि आपने कैच क्‍यों छोड़ा. उन्‍होंने कहा कि मैच के अलग दिन लंच से पहले उनकी गेंद पर एक और बल्‍लेबाज का कैच छूट गया था.
