This locust is known as English locust to agriculture departments and botanists of different countries.In Bengal its name is Patanga, it is a species of grasshopper.Slightly shy in nature, this insect, about an inch long, flies in flocks with a large number of members of its own species for food.Usually, a swarm of insects can range from a few lakhs to a thousand crores.When locusts attack crop fields, it becomes a nightmare for a farmer.A full grown locust can eat food equal to its weight every day.In the area where they attack, they do not move to another area until the food runs out.According to botanists, insects are quite harmless when left alone, but in groups they become destructive.According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a square kilometer of locusts can feed 35,000 people a year.A large locust can eat up to 120 miles of land a day.Not only do they eat food, they also reproduce.Since the end of last year, locusts have invaded several countries in Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, causing extensive crop damage. Earlier this year, locust infestations in Pakistan caused extensive damage to crops.Emergency measures were imposed in the country due to locust infestation.Then locusts entered the Punjab of India, which was three kilometers long. In that context, warnings have been issued in several states around Punjab.After Pakistan and India, locust-like insects have been found in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. The insect looks a lot like a locust.
