Vijay Amritraj is without doubt among the greatest sportsmen India has produced, In a two-decade career that saw ups and downs he beat the world's best and also came to be known as one of the most affable and gentlemanly stars on the professional tennis circuit. As a tennis player he turned pro in 1970 and retired in 1993, winning $1.3 million career prize money. Amritraj finished with a singles record of 390 – 203 with 16 titles. His highest singles ranking was #16 in July 1980. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the US Open twice.
