On 30 April 1993, Monica Seles - the dominant player of her era - was stabbed by a deranged Steffi Graf fan. It would be two years before she returned to the court, but her game and the sport would never be the same. Seles became the youngest woman to win the French Open in 1990 when she defeated No. 1-ranked Steffi Graff in the finals. In 1991, Seles, a power player with a habit of grunting loudly during matches, replaced Graf as the top-ranked women’s player. At the time of the 1993 attack, she had won eight Grand Slam titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world.

साल 1993 की बात है. जर्मनी के हैमबर्ग शहर में हो रहे सिटिजन कप खेला जा रहा था. उस समय दुनिया की नंबर एक टेनिस खिलाड़ी मोनिका सेलेस भी इस टूर्नामेंट में खेल रही थी. लगभग 6000 के तादाद में दर्शक ये मैच देखने पहुंचे हुए थे. क्वार्टरफाइनल में मोनिका का सामना बुल्गारिया की मागदेलेना मलीवा से था. पहले सेट में मोनिका विपक्षी खिलाड़ी से 4-3 एक अंतर से आगे थी. तभी उस भीड़ में एक सनकी फैन टेनिस कोर्ट पर आया और मोनिका सेलेस की पीठ में चाक़ू घोंप दिया. मोनिका वहीँ कोर्ट पर गिर पड़ी. उस वक्त मोनिका की उम्र 19 साल थी. इससे पहले की वो पागल सनकी आदमी दूसरा छुरा घोंपता. आयोजकों ने उसे धर दबोचा. उस सनकी आदमी का नाम गुंटर पाख़ा था.
