There could be a few relieved men in the village of Gawthorpe, in North England, because for the first time in 57 years they don't have to find excuses to avoid running in the World Coal Carrying Championships.

Like many of Britain's quirky contests, the World Coal Carrying Championships was forged in the pub as a test of fitness and bravery.

Taking place every Easter Monday, the championship was dreamt up over a pint of beer in 1963 - the story goes that one man walked into his local pub and remarked to another customer that he looked a little unfit.

Somewhat offended, he challenged the man to a race while carrying a sack of coal... and the World Coal Carrying Championships were born.
