Surgical facemasks likely won’t protect against coronavirus, according to officials, who said it’s recommended for those already sick, but an N-95 respirator mask can effectively filter air particles.

A lot has changed in the weeks since this video was uploaded. I’ve been researching masks nonstop, and as more and more data and news has been coming out about their effectiveness, there are some vital things I wanted to share.
#1: The masks in this video were purchased when everyone here in China (where I live) was ordered to immediately purchase and wear them when outside. Most of the masks I later gave away to others who were unable to buy them. There is no longer a mask shortage here in China.
#2: My stance on masks has not changed. N95s (no valve) are the still masks I recommend. Surgical masks should be used if you can’t get an N95. Their protection, while modest, is far better than nothing.
#3: N95s can be safely reused. Do not wash them, and do not hang them in the sun to dry. The best method is to let them dry out for a few days. (Overnight will probably be long enough unless your home is cold and damp)
#4: There may be a shortage of masks where you live, but China has since ramped up production here, and anyone can purchase them at low cost. Try searching on Aliexpress for “N95 masks”. You can contact the sellers directly if you are curious about FDA approval, filtration levels, etc.
