00:06 Jamilah Ellis: There are things that your breast milk can 00:08 provide for your child that they can't get from any other 00:10 source, and so helping them, like, take hold of that power that 00:13 you have to really impact your child’s health in a positive way. 00:17 Dr. Sahira Long: Women know that there are benefits to 00:19 breastfeeding, but they don’t necessarily know that they’re 00:22 putting their children at certain risk if they choose not to 00:25 breastfeed. 00:26 Children who are breastfed have a lower risk of becoming obese. 00:29 The imprint that’s placed in infancy of learning when you’re 00:34 hungry and when you’re full is set by the baby as opposed to a 00:38 bottle. 00:38 Ekere Ekandem Olojala: As mothers we are concerned with the 00:40 baby finishing the bottle. 00:41 With breastfeeding, they move at their own pace when they’re 00:44 feeding. 00:45 They also have less problems with ear infections, no problems 00:50 with being constipated, because breast milk is easily digested. 00:54 Dr. Sahira Long: There is a much higher incidence of asthma in the 00:56 African-American community, where -- 00:58 because asthma is more of an allergic and inflammatory 01:02 process, the thought is that different antibodies 01:07 and cytokines that the body -- 01:10 that breast milk has, that formula doesn’t provide that 01:13 protection as moms nurse. 01:17 So moms get exposed to everything throughout the day and their 01:21 bodies automatically start making defenses against it, and so 01:25 that defense is passed in the form of antibodies through the 01:28 breast milk. 01:29 Jamilah Ellis: The benefits that I personally experienced from 01:31 breastfeeding was the relationship that I dealt with each of my 01:35 children, kind of having that one-on-one time on a regular 01:39 basis, like every day. 01:40 Dr. Sahira Long: Decreased respiratory infections, decreased ear 01:43 infections, decreased stomach infections. 01:46 So parents always want to know “what can I do to keep my child 01:50 from getting sick,” and this is one that, you know, vaccines are 01:54 definitely key, but this is, to me, the first vaccine.
