Hainan chicken rice can be found in Chinese restaurants around the world, but just like French fries aren’t from France, Hainan chicken isn’t from Hainan in China.

The dish was actually invented in Singapore, and it’s so iconic that people there call it the national dish. So how did Hainan chicken rice end up in Singapore? Here’s the story.
