Demon king Hirnakashyap was so haughty and immoral that he barred the people of his kingdom from praying to the lord. He had a very strong desire to become immortal. In order to fulfill his dream, he started performing hard penance to please Lord Brahma. One day, Brahma appeared before him and granted him five special powers. Brahma gave Hirnakashyap the following five boons: neither a human nor an animal would be able to him; neither he would be inside the door nor outside the door, neither he would be during the day nor at night, neither he would be by any Astra nor by any Shastra, neither he would be on the land nor in the water or in the air. हिरण्यकश्यप का पुत्र प्रह्लाद भगवान विष्णु का परम भक्त था। पिता के लाख कहने के बावजूद प्रह्लाद विष्णु की भक्ति करता रहा। असुराधिपति हिरण्यकश्यप ने अपने पुत्र को मारने की भी कई बार कोशिश की परंतु भगवान स्वयं उसकी रक्षा करते रहे और उसका बाल भी बांका नहीं हुआ। असुर राजा की बहन होलिका को भगवान शंकर से ऐसी चादर मिली थी जिसे ओढ़ने पर अग्नि उसे जला नहीं सकती थी। होलिका उस चादर को ओढ़कर प्रह्लाद को गोद में लेकर चिता पर बैठ गई। दैवयोग से वह चादर उड़कर प्रह्लाद के ऊपर आ गई, जिससे प्रह्लाद की जान बच गई और होलिका जल गई। होलिका दहन के दिन होली जलाकर होलिका नामक दुर्भावना का अंत और भगवान द्वारा भक्त की रक्षा का जश्न मनाया जाता है।
