Olympics must start on time says Tokyo 2020 boss as torch plans revised
  • 4 years ago
Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee President Yoshiro Mori ruled out scaling down the Summer Olympics at a news conference on Friday.

Organisers have been forced to downsize the arrival ceremony for the Olympic torch because of the spreading coronavirus, but insist the Olympics must start on time even if some events have to be modified.

Mori confirmed that they will cancel plans to send 140 Japanese children to Greece to give the flame a send off on 19th March, a day before it is due to arrive in Japan.

The Olympic torch will be lit on 12th March in a ceremony in Greece and then flown to Japan where it will be welcomed in Miyagi at a Japan Air Self-Defense base in the northern part of the country.
