First public caning of the year in Indonesian province as 8 guilty of 'violating Islamic law'

Local government in Aceh province, Indonesia punished eight individuals with public caning after being convicted of violating Islamic law.

Footage from March 2 in Banda Aceh shows several individuals being escorted to a stage where the public can watch them being repeatedly hit with a cane.

It was reported that one of the eight individuals was convicted of sexual harassment whereas the rest were convicted of committing other sexual acts between men and women.

Since 2001, Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that enforces Islamic law as an effort to prevent various forms of community ills, the Aceh Islamic Criminal Code also regulates sanctions for immoral practices and drinking.
