About sucralfate :
Sucralfate belongs to a class of medications called ulcer protectives.sucralfate is a complex of sulfated sucrose and aluminium hydroxide
Sucralfate is used in the treatment of intestinal ulcers and stomach ulcers.
Doctor also prescribes sucralfate in the condition of bile reflux,gastritis and in stress ulcers.
Sucralfate forms a coating over the ulcer or any other raw surface.This creates a physical barrier that protects the ulcer/raw surface from the gastric acid or any other injury, allowing it to heal.
Common side effects -
constipation, dry mouth, nausea hypophosphatemia
how to use -
•Take it on an empty stomach, preferably 1 hour before a meal.
•It may take for 4-6 weeks or more for the ulcers to heal completely.Do not stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor tells you to.
• Inform your doctor if you have a kidney disorder.
sucralfate interactions-
•Do not take antacid 30 minutes before or after taking this medication. Antacids given concurrently reduce the efficacy of sucralfate.
•Sucralfate Adsorbs many drug and interferes with the absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, cimetidine ,phenytoin and digoxin, resulting in treatment failure.
The interaction of drugs with sucralfate can be avoided to a maximum extent when medications are taken either 2 hours before or after taking sucralfate.
Dose-
The ulcer healing dose of sucralfate is 1 g taken one hour before three major meals for 4 to 8 weeks.
