Best and worst dressed on the 2020 BAFTAS red carpet

Baftas 2020: Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger and Sam Mendes take statues – so were there any surprises at all?

The 73rd British Academy Film Awards (Baftas) took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday. The penultimate awards ceremony of the season this will be the last time some of the world’s biggest stars can hone their style before the Oscars next week. We’re delighted to report more hits than misses on the red carpet.

While previous award ceremonies championed sustainability with vegan menus, the Baftas delivered a challenge to the stars and set it as the dress code for the event – a task some celebrities managed to fulfil more than others.

The awards themselves didn’t contain any surprises after what had gone on earlier in the season. Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for his harrowing performance in Joker, Renée Zellweger took home a best actress nod for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy. Sam Mendes’ war epic 1917 won best picture as it did at the Golden Globes. Brad Pitt and Laura Dern again picked up awards for their supporting roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Marriage Story respectively.

Awards for best and worst dressed on the red carpet were more fiercely contested. Take a look at our video to see what fashion was on trend for the evening, and if you agree with who made our best- and worst-dressed lists.
