Aceh's miracle tsunami survivor's push for better early warning, 15 years on
  • 4 years ago
Among the body bags containing the remains of those who perished in the 26 December 2004 tsunami lay Arif Munandar - who miraculously woke up four days after being pronounced dead. Today, the 49-year-old Indonesian works as a radio communication technician at Aceh's disaster mitigation agency, considering it part of his personal mission to keep his village's tsunami warning system well-maintained.

Fifteen years on from the devastating Boxing Day tsunamis that claimed over 230,000 lives, many of the hardest struck villages have rebuilt with warning systems that could save lives if another similar disaster strikes.
