Nagasaki, the cradle of Christianity in Japan

  • hace 5 años
Nagasaki, Nov 23(EFE).- On Sunday Pope Francis will be visiting the Japanese city of Nagasaki to make a call for nuclear disarmament and to honor the martyrs of Catholicism in the country where they were brutally persecuted for centuries.

Nagasaki, also known as the Rome of the East, is Japan's stronghold of Catholicism and Christianity.

Around 4.4 percent of the city's population is of the Catholic faith, while in other regions they do not reach 0.6 percent.

Catholics accounted for just 0.34 percent of the total Japanese population in 2018, according to the most recent figures from the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Japan. (Camera: MARÍA ROLDÁN. Editor: NATTAKARN JEAMRUGEEKUL).
