'Hailstones like ice bombs': Aussies cower in car as supercell storm unleashes on highway
  • 4 years ago
A fierce supercell hailstorm unleashed thousands of large hailstones onto vehicles driving along the Bruce Highway in Queensland.

Filmed on November 17, Mick Taplin was driving to the Royal Brisbane hospital to visit his mother when a passing hailstorm rained down "ice bombs" onto their vehicle, cracking the windscreen.

Taplin told Newsflare: "On our way to visit my mother in the ICU in Royal Brisbane hospital after she had a procedure that morning to correct a sudden brain aneurysm didn’t go as we had planned.

"If the weekend wasn’t horrific enough we drove straight into the epicentre of a supercell storm with large hailstones like ice bombs that battered hundreds of cars on the Bruce Highway, including us in our beloved Lexus sports car.

"[We are] still negotiating with the insurance company as many cars were smashed during this storm combined with bush fires have stretched the insurance companies assessors."
