The South Korean movie 'Parasite' is creating a massive buzz in the United States.
In fact, it is being seen as a contender for movie of the year in many quarters.
And a recent New York Times article on the film's famous director lays out why 'Parasite' is so worthy of praise.
Won Jung-hwan has more.
A South Korean director with a passionate fanbase is earning global acclaim.
The New York Times has highlighted Bong Joon-ho's 2019 masterpiece 'Parasite',... while also touching on his other dazzling works.
The newspaper first focused on how the movie,... which earned more than 70-million U.S. dollars at the box office in South Korea,... has contributed to the country's debate about economic inequality.
It continued by saying that the movie's impact wasn't limited to South Korea, but has also affected discourse in the United States where similar arguments are taking place.
It says the director combines social awareness and entertainment in such a way to rekindle the "democratic promise of movies".
The article also mentioned Bong's previous films,… looking at their similarities with 'Parasite'.
But the article said,… trying to pigeonhole Bong's work by genre or style is to miss both its originality and consistency.
It says what makes Bong's work both dazzling and shocking is how he manages to be at once fantastical and true to life,… intensely metaphorical and devastatingly concrete.
'Parasite' won the Palme d'Or, the highest prize in Cannes, this year and has been mentioned as an Oscar contender, something rare for subtitled films outside of the foreign film category.
It premiered in New York and Los Angeles on October 11 and is now playing in more than 30 theaters across North America.
The film's global revenue recently topped 100 million U.S. dollars.
