At least 42 corpses were retrieved from the mud and rubble after a landslide in Bafoussam, western Cameroon, the Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji confirmed.

Among the victims were four pregnant women who perished in the incident.

The landslide occurred on Monday (October 28) at about 10 pm local time, the country's Housing Minister said.

It took almost 24 hours for the victims to be retrieved.

Children, including those who fled the conflict in the North West and South West regions, were also among the deaths.

An interministerial fact-finding mission has been launched and survivors, as well as the families of the deceased according to the government, will be taken care of during their entire treatment.

The government is considering following up on the strict implementation of urbanization laws.

Cameroon's president Paul Biya has sent his condolences to the families.
