Powerful storms blew a tree onto a car and flung another into a family's home injuring two people.

The strong gusts and heavy rain battered towns in Chonburi, eastern Thailand on Tuesday (October 29) night.

A huge black afara tree fell on a car belonging to Kovit Limtemsap, 53, that was parked outside the house.

While on a nearby street, a eucalyptus was blown over and fell onto the home of pensioner Ratchada Maturose, 58, whose son and daughter were injured.

The grandmother said that the tree hit them by surprise in the middle of the night.

She said: "It was around 2 am I remember the heavy rain and a lot of lightning when suddenly I heard a roof tile cracking noise from my son's room.

"Fortunately, it was the roof tile that fell onto them not the tree otherwise they might be more seriously injured."

The father and his child were rushed to hospital for checks while the provincial authorities promised to cover the costs of repairs to the homes.

Kovit, whose car was damaged, said he had grown the tree by himself.

He said: "I've been hand-rearing the tree for ten years so it's really bad luck that both the tree and my car to have been destroyed.''
