DO YOU WANT TO LEARN SOME DECORATION IDEAS FOR HALLOWEEN?
When I was little, my father had a couple of these cute ghosts on our piano during Halloween. I remember thinking that they really floated without knowing that it was starch that kept them high. This year, I decided it was time to do something for my friends to experience. I used liquid starch, which is difficult to achieve. Also, it's a lot of money for a ghost or two. So, I found a better and cheaper way to do this. This is what you need:
Estopilla (I just found mine in the grocery store and it cost me about $ 3. I used the whole package for a ghost. I cut it in half and used 2 layers to make it more resistant)
Black felt
Cornstarch
Water
Any type of "improvised" support to support cheesecloth while it dries.
First, you start making homemade liquid starch.
Pour 2 cups of water into a microwave safe container. Then, add a cup of cornstarch and mix well.
Microwave in 30 seconds, stirring in the middle, until it thickens. Mine took about 2 minutes in total. This is more or less what you are looking for:
Set it aside and let it cool slightly. Although you don't want it to cool.
Meanwhile, set up your stand. You can use cups, balloons, styrofoam balls. Whatever you can find to make the correct shape and size. You just want to make sure you can get it out from under the cheesecloth once it is dry. The balloons are nice because you can blow them up. I had no balloons at hand, so this is what I used:
I put some freezer paper on the table so that the ghost had something to sit on (besides the table) while it dried.
Then, I cut the cheesecloth in half. I wanted my ghost to be a little stronger. Cover each piece of cheesecloth with cornstarch. It took me a bit to work it. You want to make sure it is completely covered.
Place the cheesecloth pieces one at a time on a makeup base and make sure you fix it as you wish. Once it's dry, you can't change anything.
Once you have it perfect, let it dry completely. Mine took a night. When it is hard, carefully remove the cheesecloth from the mold and glue two felt eyes.
It's really hard to capture in the camera, but the ghost is completely transparent and seems to be floating!
